I am a Sikh-American practitioner of Kathak, a classical dance tradition from South Asia. My movement practice finds its origins within the traditional vocabulary of Kathak, among which are complex and percussive rhythmic footwork patterns, heeled pirouettes, and the narrative storytelling. As a Sikh-diasporic practitioner, however, I am also constantly negotiating the multiple identities I inhabit. My body becomes the battleground upon which narratives of the past and present; tradition and modernity; religion and secularity compete . . . weaving narratives in the abstractness of lines, engaging the breath and spine as the origin of movement, and reimagining the pathways of energy in the body.
